Where Sati fell, the Mother stayed
When Sati gave up her life at her father’s yajna, Shiva carried her across the world in grief. Wherever a part of her fell, a seat of the Goddess was born. There are fifty-one of them, from a hilltop in Assam to a cave in Balochistan to the very tip of India.
Most of us have visited one or two. Few people know the story of each one, or where all fifty-one actually are. This book brings them together, simply told, so you can know them, pray at them, and plan to visit them.
“Every Shakti Peetha in this book, from a hilltop in Assam to a cave by the sea, begins with one story.” From Chapter 1
Shiva and Sati on Kailash, the painting that opens the book
Real pages: Kamakhya, Shakti Peetha 1 of 51
Every peetha answers the same five questions
Each of the fifty-one gets its own pages, laid out the same way, so you always know where to look.
At a glanceThe place, the part of Sati believed to have fallen there, the Devi, and her Bhairava.
KathaकथाThe story and the legends of that place, in easy English.
Darshanदर्शनWhat you will actually see when you stand there.

Things most people have never been told
A few of the stories waiting inside.
Kamakhya has no statueThe Goddess is worshipped as a natural cleft in the rock, kept moist by an underground spring. Every June the temple closes for three days.Chapter 2, Assam
At Jwalamukhi, the Goddess is a flameSmall natural flames burn from the rock itself, and devotees honour each one. There is no statue at all.Chapter 6, Himachal Pradesh
A wedding that never happenedShiva set out from Suchindram to marry the maiden Goddess at Kanyakumari. A rooster crowed too early, and she is said to wait on the shore still.Chapter 8, Tamil Nadu
The Mother of the beesAt Srisailam, the Goddess took the form of a great swarm of bees to defeat a demon no two-legged or four-legged creature could kill.Chapter 8, Andhra Pradesh
Coconuts for a mud volcanoBefore pilgrims reach the cave of Hinglaj Mata, they climb a mud volcano and offer coconuts into its crater. Local neighbours call the shrine Nani Mandir.Chapter 9, Pakistan
Shakti before ShivaIn Kathmandu, many pilgrims visit Guhyeshwari first and only then go to Pashupatinath. Here the Goddess is a sacred water pot over a spring.Chapter 9, Nepal
A lake with no templeAt Manasarovar, below Mount Kailash, there is no shrine to visit. The whole sacred lake is the peetha.Chapter 9, Tibet
Tied together by red threadsAt Deoghar, the tops of the Shiva and Parvati temples are joined by long red threads, like the knot tied at a Hindu wedding.Chapter 2, Jharkhand
Two chapters you will keep coming back to
Navadurga: the nine forms of the Mother
A full chapter for Navratri. Each of the nine forms has her own page and painting: her story, her vahana, and what she holds in her hands. It opens with the Devi Kavacham verse that names all nine, in Sanskrit with a simple meaning.
No one visits all fifty-one at once. This chapter groups nearby peethas into eight trips you can make, and covers the best seasons, what to carry and simple temple manners.
It also tells you about the path around Gabbar hill at Ambaji, where copies of all fifty-one peethas stand side by side, so devotees who cannot travel far can bow to every one in a single day.
Written with care, and honest about it
Families and temples have remembered these places differently for centuries. So the book keeps a few simple promises.
Every fact checked twice
Each detail was confirmed in at least two sources. Where we could not confirm something, we left it out.
One list, never mixed
The book follows the fifty-one of the Pithanirnaya, the list most pilgrims mean, with a Devi and a Bhairava for every seat.
Every claim is named
Where more than one temple is honoured as the same peetha, all are named and none is chosen. If your family’s tradition points elsewhere, it is not wrong.
Belief is called belief
The stories are told as devotees believe them. The book never promises a cure, a wish granted or a miracle.

Questions
Is this a physical book?
No. It is a PDF ebook that you download and keep. You can read it on your phone, tablet or laptop, or print it at home.
Does it really cover all 51 peethas?
Yes. Every one of the fifty-one in the Pithanirnaya list has its own pages, from Kamakhya (1) to Lanka (51). The full list is shown above on this page.
Which list of 51 does it follow?
The list of the Pithanirnaya, the one most books and pilgrims mean when they say “the 51 Shakti Peethas”. Chapter 1 also explains the other counts you may have heard: 4, 18, 52 and 108.
What about peethas whose location is disputed?
Where more than one temple is honoured as the same peetha, the book names them all in an “Also believed” note and does not take sides. Where a site is not known for certain, the book says so honestly.
Does it include peethas outside India?
Yes. A full chapter covers the nine peethas in Pakistan, Tibet, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, written simply and respectfully, with a reminder to check travel rules before you go.
Is the book in Hindi?
This edition is in simple English. Every peetha’s name is also printed in Devanagari, and key verses are given in Sanskrit with their meaning.
Are the paintings photographs of the temples?
No. They are artistic paintings made specially for this book. They are not photographs of any temple or of the sacred images inside, and the book is not connected with any temple trust.
